Aerospace-grade graphite, dominated by high-density ultra-fine grain isostatic graphite, is one of the most critical strategic carbon materials in the modern aerospace industry. Different from photovoltaic, metallurgical and semiconductor graphite products, aerospace graphite components need to operate stably in extreme composite environments of ultra-high temperature, instantaneous thermal shock, high-speed airflow erosion, vacuum radiation and alternating load, which puts forward far higher requirements on material purity, structural uniformity, mechanical stability and processing precision. In the field of global aerospace manufacturing, aerospace graphite has formed a complete set of exclusive technical standards and grade classification systems, becoming an important symbol to measure the deep-processing capacity of high-end graphite enterprises.

The core performance parameters of qualified aerospace-grade graphite cover five major dimensions, including density, grain size, purity, thermal performance and mechanical performance. First, the volume density must reach more than 1.85g/cm³, and the density uniformity error of the whole blank is controlled within ±0.02g/cm³, which avoids local structural collapse caused by density difference under high-temperature ablation. Second, the grain size is limited to ultra-fine grade below 5μm; finer grain structure can effectively disperse thermal stress and improve the anti-thermal shock ability of components, preventing crack propagation under repeated temperature changes. Third, the total impurity content is strictly controlled below 3ppm, and metal impurities such as iron, copper and nickel that are easy to oxidize and volatilize at high temperature are basically eliminated, avoiding component failure caused by impurity thermal decomposition.

In terms of thermal performance, aerospace graphite components require a linear thermal expansion coefficient lower than 1.2×10⁻⁶/℃, which ensures that the component size remains stable during instantaneous temperature rise from room temperature to 3000℃, without deformation or cracking. Meanwhile, the high-temperature thermal conductivity is uniformly distributed, which can quickly export local heat accumulation and reduce the ablation degree of key parts. In terms of mechanical performance, the bending strength is required to be higher than 65MPa, and the compressive strength exceeds 120MPa. Different from ordinary materials whose strength decreases with temperature, high-quality aerospace graphite can maintain stable mechanical strength even at 2500℃, which is the key to ensure the safety of reusable aerospace equipment.

The manufacturing process of aerospace graphite components is extremely rigorous, divided into blank screening, multi-stage purification, stress relief treatment, ultra-precision machining and surface anti-ablation coating five core links. Ordinary industrial graphite blanks cannot be used for aerospace manufacturing due to unstable internal structure and more micro-pores. Qualified aerospace graphite blanks need to undergo 3-5 cycles of high-temperature halogen purification and vacuum impregnation to eliminate internal micro-defects and trace impurities. After blank pretreatment, the materials need to be placed in a constant temperature and humidity environment for 15-20 days of natural aging and stress relief, which completely eliminates the internal residual stress generated by pressing and graphitization, and avoids delayed cracking of finished components in service.

The precision machining link is the core difficulty restricting the quality of aerospace graphite components. Aerospace special-shaped parts such as rocket nozzle throat liners, hypersonic vehicle thermal barrier parts and satellite vacuum test fixtures mostly adopt thin-walled curved special structures, with processing tolerance requirements as high as ±0.005mm. Ordinary CNC processing equipment is prone to edge collapse, burrs and micro-cracks during processing, which directly leads to component scrapping. Only professional precision processing equipment and mature process technology can meet the ultra-high precision manufacturing standards of aerospace components.

Huixian Jincheng Abrasive & Graphite Mold Factory has long been rooted in the R&D and customized manufacturing of aerospace-grade high-end graphite components, and has formed a complete set of mature manufacturing processes matching international aerospace standards after 42 years of technical precipitation.
