Graphite has excellent chemical stability and is inert to most conventional chemical media at room temperature, which is an important reason for its wide application in chemical anti-corrosion industrial equipment. However, in high-temperature industrial environments, various corrosive media will produce strong chemical erosion and physical damage to graphite materials, leading to structural loosening, pore expansion and component failure. Different from single physical damage, chemical corrosion is cumulative and irreversible, and long-term corrosion will completely destroy the internal crystal structure of graphite, making it lose repair value.

Strong acid corrosion is the most common industrial corrosion form. High-temperature sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and nitric acid media will penetrate into the open pore structure of graphite, react with trace impurity elements in graphite, generate soluble salts and gas products, expand internal pore gaps, and cause surface peeling and structural loosening. Ordinary low-purity graphite has many impurity points, which are easy to form corrosion breakthrough points, resulting in rapid expansion of corrosion range. High-purity dense graphite has no active impurity points and compact pore structure, which can effectively resist strong acid penetration and corrosion.

Strong alkali corrosion has a unique damage mechanism different from acid corrosion. High-temperature alkaline media will chemically react with the carbon crystal structure of graphite, destroy the layered crystal bonding force, cause graphite crystal layer peeling and pulverization, and seriously reduce the mechanical strength and structural stability of components. Alkali corrosion has no obvious corrosion traces in the early stage, and once macroscopic damage appears, the component has completely failed, which is highly concealed and harmful.

Molten salt and molten metal corrosion are common in metallurgical and new energy industrial scenarios. High-temperature molten salt has strong permeability, which can penetrate into the micro-pores of graphite, and produce volume expansion after cooling and solidification, resulting in internal stress cracking of graphite. Molten metal will produce wetting adhesion and electrochemical corrosion on the graphite surface, causing surface peeling and component deformation, affecting the dimensional accuracy and service life of graphite molds and crucibles.

The core of graphite anti-corrosion material selection is to match purity, pore structure and modification process according to corrosive media characteristics. For strong acid corrosion environments, high-purity multi-impregnated dense graphite should be selected to eliminate impurity corrosion points and block pore penetration channels. For strong alkali corrosion scenarios, special alkali-resistant modified graphite with surface inert treatment is required to protect graphite crystal structure. For molten medium corrosion working conditions, composite coated anti-corrosion graphite is adopted to isolate medium contact and prevent adhesion and penetration corrosion.
