Graphite Consumables for Rare Earth Metallurgy: Performance Requirements in Molten Salt Electrolysis Environment

Rare earth molten salt electrolysis runs at 850–1100°C. The electrolyte composed of rare earth fluoride and alkali metal fluoride has strong chemical erosion performance. Graphite components work under the combined effect of high temperature, strong current and corrosive molten salt. Graphite anodes participate in electrode reaction continuously during electrolysis, gradually consumed by oxidation; graphite curved bricks lining the cell wall prevent molten electrolyte leakage and bear long-term chemical erosion. Once graphite components fail prematurely, electrolytic production must stop, causing huge production losses.

Many rare earth smelters overlook the matching of graphite material grade and electrolysis process. Ordinary molded graphite has high porosity. Molten fluoride penetrates into internal pores, causing graphite internal expansion, peeling and fragmentation within a short cycle. High-density impregnated graphite effectively solves this problem. After vacuum impregnation treatment, graphite surface and internal pores are sealed, slowing molten salt penetration and reducing consumption rate significantly. Impurity control of graphite is also critical. If graphite contains excessive iron, silicon and other impurities, these impurities will enter rare earth liquid metal and reduce the purity of rare earth products, affecting the performance of downstream permanent magnet materials. Therefore, graphite used for rare earth electrolysis must adopt low-impurity carbon raw materials.

Isostatic Pressed Graphite Groove

The mainstream graphite products used in rare earth metallurgy cover: graphite anode plates of various specifications, arc-shaped graphite bricks for electrolytic cell lining, graphite crucibles for rare earth metal remelting, and graphite conductive rods. Different electrolytic cell capacities and rare earth varieties require customized graphite size and material formula. Reasonable structural design of graphite anode can balance current distribution and avoid local overheating and accelerated ablation.

Huixian Jincheng Abrasive & Graphite Mold Factory has long-term supporting experience for rare earth electrolysis enterprises. Established in 1984 in Huixian City, Henan Province, the factory can customize graphite anode plates, electrolytic cell curved graphite bricks, graphite lining blocks and melting graphite crucibles according to customer drawings. Supported by over 50 machining machine tools, the maximum processing size reaches 1000mm. Jincheng Graphite provides vacuum impregnation treatment to improve graphite density and anti-corrosion capability. The technical team recommends suitable graphite grades for lanthanum, cerium, neodymium and other rare earth electrolysis processes, helping smelters balance service life and procurement cost. Products are widely adopted by rare earth manufacturers across China and exported to Southeast Asian rare earth processing enterprises.
