Graphite materials have excellent high-temperature resistance in vacuum and inert atmosphere, and their structural performance can remain stable even at ultra-high temperatures above 2000℃. However, in conventional industrial high-temperature environments with oxygen, graphite will undergo oxidative reaction with oxygen when the temperature exceeds 450℃, generating carbon dioxide and causing surface ablation, structural thinning and performance attenuation. With the increase of temperature and service time, the oxidation degree of graphite will be intensified, resulting in reduced structural strength, decreased thermal conductivity and shortened service life of graphite components. High-temperature oxidation failure has always been the main technical bottleneck restricting the wide application of graphite materials in open high-temperature industrial scenarios such as industrial furnaces, high-temperature kilns and thermal processing equipment.

The thermal stability and oxidation resistance of graphite are mainly affected by three core factors: material purity, structural compactness and surface protection state. Impurity elements in graphite will act as oxidation catalysts, accelerating the oxidative ablation reaction of graphite at high temperature; loose internal structure will lead to oxygen penetration into the material interior, causing internal oxidation damage; unprotected graphite surface will directly contact with oxygen, resulting in rapid surface ablation. Ordinary unmodified graphite products have poor high-temperature oxidation resistance, and their service life in 800℃ open high-temperature environment is only 300-500 hours, which cannot meet the long-term operation needs of industrial high-temperature equipment.

In order to solve the problem of graphite high-temperature oxidation failure, the global graphite industry has developed a variety of mature anti-oxidation modification technologies, mainly divided into matrix modification and surface coating protection. Matrix modification optimizes the internal structure and material formula of graphite by adding anti-oxidation functional additives during the production process, improving the internal structural compactness and high-temperature stability of graphite, and inhibiting the occurrence of internal oxidation reaction. This technology has the advantages of uniform modification effect and long-term stability, and is suitable for graphite products working in long-term high-temperature environments.

Surface coating protection technology forms a dense high-temperature anti-oxidation coating on the surface of graphite products through dipping, spraying and high-temperature curing processes. The coating has excellent high-temperature stability and oxygen isolation performance, which can completely isolate graphite matrix from oxygen, avoid oxidative ablation, and significantly improve the high-temperature service life of graphite products. Common anti-oxidation coating materials include silicon-based ceramic coatings, boron-based anti-oxidation coatings and composite inorganic coatings, which have different temperature resistance ranges and application scenarios. Silicon-based coatings are suitable for 800-1200℃ medium and high temperature scenarios, while boron-based composite coatings can adapt to ultra-high temperature environments above 1500℃.

In addition to the two mainstream modification technologies, gradient anti-oxidation treatment and high-temperature densification treatment are also advanced industrial optimization technologies. Gradient modification realizes layered anti-oxidation protection of graphite materials, balancing surface anti-oxidation performance and internal structural stability; high-temperature densification treatment reduces internal pores of graphite, improves structural compactness, and inhibits oxygen penetration and internal oxidation. The combination of multiple modification technologies can maximize the high-temperature oxidation resistance of graphite products and meet the ultra-strict service requirements of high-end high-temperature industrial equipment.

The industrial application data shows that modified anti-oxidation graphite products can increase the high-temperature service life by more than 5 times compared with ordinary graphite products, and can work stably in open high-temperature environments for a long time, which greatly reduces the replacement frequency and maintenance cost of industrial graphite components. Anti-oxidation modified graphite has become the mainstream material for industrial furnace graphite components, high-temperature thermal processing tools and metallurgical high-temperature auxiliary materials.
