Horizontal Continuous Casting Graphite Mold
Details
Horizontal continuous casting graphite molds are core inner lining components of crystallizers used in horizontal continuous casting for non-ferrous metals (such as copper, brass, aluminum, zinc, bronze, and cupronickel). Also known as graphite crystallizers or graphite mold sleeves, they are installed inside cooling water jackets and directly contact high-temperature molten metal. They are responsible for shaping, heat conduction, solidification, and demolding, enabling the continuous pulling of rod, tube, bar, and profile billets. These molds are essential consumables in industries such as wire and cable, copper and aluminum profiles, bathroom hardware, and electrical busbars. Horizontal continuous casting differs from top-pulling or vertical continuous casting: the mold axis is horizontally arranged, molten metal flows horizontally into one end, and the cast product is pulled out horizontally at a uniform speed. This method is ideal for mass production of rods, tubes, and small-sized profiles.

Description
High Quality Graphite Mold

The molten metal (copper at approximately 1100–1200℃, aluminum at approximately 700℃) flows smoothly from the insulation furnace through the channel into the graphite mold cavity;
The high-temperature heat is rapidly conducted through the graphite wall to the outer copper/steel water jacket, which is then removed by the circulating cooling water, forming a stable solidification shell;
The billet completes the surface solidification and semi-solidification of the core part within the mold, and is pulled out uniformly by the traction machine;
The graphite does not adhere to the metal, is self-lubricating, and has low expansion, ensuring that the surface of the billet is smooth, the dimensions are stable, it does not crack, and it is not scratched.

The entire crystallizer = graphite mold (inner lining) + cooling copper sleeve + steel outer jacket + sealing components
Graphite mold: In direct contact with molten metal, it can be in a complete type, segmented type (front section / middle section / rear section), or valve type; the round rod mold has a round hole, the pipe mold has a through hole with a core head, and the special-shaped mold has a customized cross-section;
Cooling copper sleeve: Wraps around the outer circle of the graphite, with water channels inside for circulating water, responsible for efficient heat exchange;
Steel outer jacket: Supports, secures, and prevents deformation;
Advantages of segmented design: The front section is prone to burning out and can be replaced separately, reducing costs and minimizing downtime.

Common Materials and Requirements

The mainstream material is high-purity isostatic graphite (Isostatic Graphite), while a few low-end options use extruded graphite.
Purity: ≥99.9%, High purity ≥99.95%, Ash content ≤50 ppm. To avoid impurity contamination of the metal and the formation of pores;
Particle size: Fine grain / Ultra-fine grain (≤15 μm), uniform structure, high strength, good thermal shock resistance, and less slagging;
Common grades: Domestic G347, G458; Japanese NC-07E, NC-S71, etc.;
Optional coatings: SiC, BN (boron nitride) anti-oxidation / anti-stick coatings, to extend service life and reduce mold sticking.

Core advantage

High temperature resistance and good thermal stability: does not soften or melt at high temperatures, maintains good strength;
Fast heat conduction and uniform heat dissipation: stable cooling, uniform grain structure, reduces shrinkage / porosity / cracks;
Extremely low thermal expansion coefficient and strong thermal shock resistance: less likely to crack during cold and hot cycles, with small deformation and stable dimensions;
Natural self-lubrication, non-stick to metals: low friction, smooth demolding, bright cast billet surface, no scratches, no mold adhesion;
Chemical inertness, no metal contamination: does not react with copper / aluminum / zinc melts, ensuring metal purity, electrical conductivity / thermal conductivity;
Easy for precise processing, customizable: can be processed by turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and can be made into round, square, flat, or irregular shapes;
High cost performance, controllable material cost: compared to metal molds, has longer high-temperature lifespan, lower unit price, and easier replacement.
